If you are considering pursuing a criminal justice degree at Colorado Christian University, you may be wondering what types of careers you can pursue when you graduate. Criminal justice is a booming area with careers abounding at the local, state and federal levels. Unfortunately, due to the crime rate in the United States, there will always be a need for dedicated, Christian individuals with a criminal justice education and a desire to better the society in which they live.

Branches of Criminal Justice

First, let’s look at how careers in the criminal justice field are broken down. Branches in the CJ field include law enforcement, judiciary, corrections and private security. Education requirements and salaries vary for each position within the four branches, and the amount of danger and stress involved with these positions vary greatly.

In the law enforcement branch, primary responsibilities involve the maintenance of peace, crime prevention and supervision of criminals. The judiciary branch (court system) deals with individuals who have been arrested and charged with crime(s), and the courts determine what sanctions, if any, will be assigned to the perpetrator. Personnel in the field of corrections maintain the safety and security of criminals in their custody and provide programs to help offenders re-enter society after they have become rehabilitated through the prison system. Private security officers, a field in growing demand, protect private property (and people) and assess risk to said property and people.
