Most Common Insurance Job Titles

Actuary
Actuaries use analysis to predict the risk that an event will occur. They help insurance companies decide how much to charge for coverage of various things. Typically, actuaries work for insurance agencies and brokerages (which sell the policies of several companies) or particular insurance companies. They might also work for the government. Actuaries require skills in statistics and mathematics and must pass a series of tests.
Adjuster
Claims adjusters work with customers who have experienced a loss and are making a claim. Also known as insurance examiners, appraisers, or investigators claims adjusters must decide how much the insurance company should pay for the damage or loss.
They have to travel to meet with clients and inspect the property for which claims are being made.
Claims Clerk
Insurance claims clerks deal with paperwork related to insurance policies. They might process new policies, modify existing policies and sometimes even handle paperwork related to claim settlements.
They are also known as policy processing clerks.
Customer Service Representative
Customer service representatives help customers with various questions and concerns about their policies. They may also take details from customers after their property is damaged, communicating with them on the phone, online, or in person.
Loss Control Specialist
A loss control specialist inspects businesses to provide strategies for reducing the risk of loss or damage. Also known as risk consultants, they travel to various workplaces, note any potential hazards and report back to the insurance agency.
Sales Agent
An insurance sales agent contacts customers to sell particular types of insurance. They help customers select a policy, explain policies and maintain each client’s insurance records. Most insurance sales agents work for insurance agencies and brokerages, although other agents work with a particular insurance company.
Work takes place in an office, but agents sometimes have to travel to meet with clients.
Underwriter
An insurance underwriter decides whether someone seeking coverage should be provided with the insurance. The underwriter evaluates the application for risk and decides if the applicant meets certain criteria. An underwriter might also help set prices for various insurance policies. Most underwriters work for insurance agencies and brokerages, although others work for a particular insurance company.
